Anxiety

This toy is expected to be one of Amazon’s bestsellers this Christmas and is known as the ‘Worryeater’. The idea behind the Sorgenfresser Worry Eater, created in Germany, is that children write down or draw a picture of what’s upsetting them and put it into the toy’s mouth, which is then zipped shut — banishing their worries. Apparently, the children are also encouraged to talk to it although the toy has no listening or speaking capability of its own. Psychologists have seen a benefit in sharing feelings of anxiety and the positive impact in ‘off-loading’ worries.

One in ten children between the age of 5-16 have a diagnosed mental health disorder and children as young as 5 are being treated for anxiety issues. This will no doubt increase as the Coronavirus epidemic continues.

Is this rather ugly toy the answer for our children? Surely, we have a more sure and certain help than this lifeless toy?

As parents, grandparents, relations or friends we should be seeking every opportunity to direct our children to the Living God and His throne of grace where they may tell all those things that are a worry to them. Not only will there be the benefit of sharing these anxieties but the greatest blessing of it is that God is able to take away those things that are worrying them and bring comfort and peace in its place. And it’s free! Freely given on the ground of mercy.

‘Cast thy burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.’ Psalm 55 v22

However young or old we may be, there will be times when we feel anxious and worried, especially as we are living in this difficult and uncertain time. But we must not forget the help and comfort we find in praying to God. Paul encourages us with these words ‘For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.’ Hebrews ch4 v15&16

To find that Jesus Christ is a friend to poor needy sinners is a wonderful thing and that in every time of need He will be with you no matter how old or young you are is truly a blessing indeed.

‘Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?’ Luke ch24 v38. These were the words of the Lord Jesus to His disciples gathered together the evening of the resurrection day. So many fears, so many questions, and as He stood in their midst, they feared thinking they had seen a spirit. But it was no spirit – but a living Saviour!

His promises stand sure, His words cannot fail, may we by faith cling to this promise – ‘….and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.’ Matthew ch28 v20
